Discovered by Joseph Harden in 1862. Named Grant tree in 1867 through the efforts of Mrs. Lucretia P. Baker. Became the National Christmas Tree in 1926, President Calvin Coolidge. Also proclaimed a National Shrine for all men and women of the United States who have given their lives in service to their country,1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
