ELECTION AND APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: Having been duly elected Camp Commander, it is with the sincerest appreciation for your confidence and support that I continue with my command of the Phil Sheridan Camp #4, for 2009 term. I am pleased to assure all of you that my fellow Camp Officers and I, will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the Camp does all that it can to bring honor to our forefathers who fought to preserve the Union, and to uphold the great traditions of our Organization. My tenure will continue to be guided by the principles of our Order: Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.

I hereby establish my residence in the City of San José, County of Santa Clara, State of California as the Camp Headquarters. CAMP ORDER No. 2
Series 2009

PASSING OF BROTHER HAROLD C. SMITH, PDC

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: It is my sad duty to forward Department Order No. 10, Series 2008-2009 reporting the passing of Brother Harold C. Smith (PDC) on February 7, 2009.

Section 2: Brother Smith served this Order for many years, was a life member and a Past Commander of the Department of California & Pacific. His passing came after a lengthy illness.

Section 3: In accordance with the Department Order, the Camp Charter shall be draped in black and all Camp Brothers are respectfully directed to attach a black mourning ribbon to their membership badge (pursuant to C&R, Article III, Sec. 9) for a period of thirty (30) days.

Section 4: Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4 extends its sincere condolences to condolences to the family of Brother Smith and to the Brothers William B. Keith Camp Number 12.

The foregoing Camp Order is proclaimed this 13th day of February in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred thirty-third, in the City of San José, County of Santa Clara, State of California by Frank C. COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: I hereby establish the following eight (8) Standing Committees of the Camp for calendar year 2009 in accordance with Article XVI, Section 1 of the Camp Bylaws: Membership; Program, Publicity and Policy; Graves and War Memorials; Bylaws; History; Ceremonial Observances; Military Affairs; and Visitation. The Standing Committees shall consist of a chair and as many members as deemed necessary.

Section 2: The following Camp Brothers are hereby appointed as chairmen for each of the Standing Committees of the Camp:

CAMP ORDER No. 4
Series 2009

CAMP GUARD

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: I hereby establish the Phil Sheridan Camp Number 4 Camp Guard in accordance with Article XVII of the Camp Bylaws for the purpose of providing a Camp Color Guard when uniformed formations are required of the Camp and when a Sons of Veterans Reserve unit is not available.

Section 2: The Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp Number 4 Camp Guard shall take charge and command the Camp Color Guard, and required Camp uniformed formations, when a Sons of Veterans Reserve unit is not available and/or as directed by the Military Affairs Committee in accordance with Section 10 of Article XVI of the Camp Bylaws.

Section 3: I hereby appoint Paul E. Lavrischeff as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp 4 Camp Guard holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant through the 2009 term of my office.

CAMP ORDER No. 5
Series 2009

CAMP MEETING ATTIRE

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: As previously announced, a regular Camp Meeting has been scheduled for 10:00 am on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at American Legion Hall, Mission City Post 564, 2120 Walsh Avenue, Santa Clara, California.

Section 2: In accordance with National Regulations, Chapter V, Article III, Section 1, Brothers are hereby reminded that while in Camp they “shall be identified by the wearing of a Badge of the Order upon the left breast.”

Section 3: Brothers who possess Union Civil War uniforms are also encouraged to don such attire during Camp meetings and other official functions.

CAMP ORDER No. 6
Series 2009

PASSING OF BROTHER DONALD W. PRAY

 

By the authority vested in me as Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, by the Camp Bylaws, Department of California and Pacific Bylaws, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: It is my sad duty to report the passing of Phil Sheridan Camp Number 4 Brother Donald W. Pray on June 7, 2009 at the age of 82.

Section 2: Brother Don Pray joined Phil Sheridan Camp Number 4 in San Jose, California on October 3, 1994 and had faithfully served the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as an active member of both the Department and Camp Councils and held several appointed offices, including Camp Eagle Scout Coordinator as well as Department Encampment Delegate. Brother Don received his membership through Private L. Edward Pray of Company F, 7th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Section 3: Brother Don Pray was a retired Navy Veteran having served his country during World War II, the Korean War and the War in Vietnam. Brother Don met and married his wife Josephine in the Philippines, where she served as a civilian intelligence courier during World War II. Josephine preceded her husband in death on January 21, 2001.

Section 4: Until this year, Brother Don participated in almost every parade that the award winning Phil Sheridan Camp Number 4 formation was entered and he was a key supporter of the establishment of the Camp’s Dr. Mary E. Walker Auxiliary Number 52.

Section 5: Brother Don Pray’s loss will be deeply felt throughout the Camp. Therefore, the Camp Charter shall be draped in black and all Camp Brothers are respectfully directed to attach a black mourning ribbon to their membership badge (pursuant to C&R, Article III, Sec. 9) for a period of thirty (30) days.

Section 6: Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4 extends its sincere condolences to the Pray family, as well as all of his many friends.

The foregoing Camp Order is proclaimed this 16th day of June in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred thirty-third, in the City of San José, County of Santa Clara, State of California by Frank C. Avila, Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4, Department of California and Pacific, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
