LOCAL CIVIL WAR UNITS Eighth California Infantry |

Col. Allen L. Anderson; Lieut.-Col. Charles O. Wood; Maj. William H. Jordan. This regiment, recruited from the counties of San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Calaveras, Sacramento, Yuba, Sierra, El Dorado and Santa Clara, rendezvoused at San Francisco, and was mustered into the U. S. service between Nov. 17, 1864, and March 31, 1865, for three years. It was the last California regiment raised under the Congressional act of July, 1864, and had a total enrollment of 960 officers and men. Headquarters of the regiment were stationed at Alcatraz Island until April, 1865, and then at Fort Point during the remainder of its term of service. Company A served at Fort Point until Feb., 1865, and was then transferred to Washington Territory and Oregon for the remainder of its term. Company B was sent to Fort Stevens, Oregon, about the same time. The other companies were stationed at Fort Point, Alcatraz and Angel Islands and Benicia barracks. The regiment was mustered out at Fort Point Oct. 24, 1865.

Company C Company C of the 8th California Infantry was raised in the City of San José. Because of the local connection of Company C, the Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) company associated with the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4 chose to call themselves "Co. C, 8th California Infantry, SVR."
