JOSEPH A. AMY Co. F, 81st Indiana Infantry Ancestor of Matthew C. Reynolds |
||||
Joseph A. Amy was born on July 25, 1825 in New Amsterdam, Indiana to Joseph and Casindira Amy. Casindira’s father Sgt. Garrett Applegate served during Revolutionary War. Joseph married Martha Ann Curts on August 3, 1845, somewhere in Indiana. They had seven children from their marriage. Joseph joined Company F of the 81st Indiana Infantry as a Private on August 16, 1862 in New Albany, Indiana. This regiment was active until June 13, 1865, during which time they fought in various battles including Perryville, Murfreesboro, Winchester, and Chickamauga. At Chickamauga, the regiment was flanked on the right, and was forced to retreat. They held off the enemy until reinforcements came, but were routed. The regiment then reformed up with Carlin’s brigade, and rushed the colors off the field fearing that they might be captured. The brigade then continued to retreat from the overwhelming numbers of the enemy. The 81st had 89 casualties from the battle, Pvt. Amy was probably listed as missing since he was captured during the time the regiment was being routed by the Confederates. Pvt. Joseph A. Amy was taken as a prisoner of war to Andersonville Prison where he stayed for a year until he died at age 39 on August 15, 1864 of chronic diarrhea. He is buried in one of the mass graves dug by the soldiers at the prison. Joseph’s wife Martha after the war married John McAdams. They had no additional children. |
