Note About
On Friday, January 3, 1879, the Carson City Morning Appeal * reported:
A FINE PICTURE.—The members of Custer Post No. 5, G. A. R., in this city have been presented with an elegant large steel engraving of “Sherman’s march to the sea.” The donor is one of the National Department officers of the Grand Army of the Republic. The plate from which a limited number of these engravings were struck has been destroyed, so as to prevent the picture from becoming too common.
